Chapter Twelve

Quint walked inside the house, feeling the emptiness immediately. It was too silent. He could feel it. Not a sound was made. He glanced around the wide expanse of the front room, then the kitchen. Nothing stirred. Dancing Tree's meal was on top the stove staying warm, as usual. Scout was by the door. But from the looks of him, he was sad he'd glance up at him and whined.

"Cilla?" He called.

No answer.

Scout came to his heels, whining.

"Where is she, boy?" Quint asked the dog.

Scout laid at his feet and whined again.

He went outside, and looked around. From the looks in the dirt, someone had been here. There were tracks around the yard, footprints, but nothing leading to the barn. He checked his horses. They were all there. she hadn't left on her own.

"Banks," he yelled. He went out into the yard and turned around several times. "He's got her!"

A dozen things went through his mind. Did he take her willingly, or unwillingly, that was the question? He needed an answer. If she went on her own, then, he had no right to interfere, but if he took her and she didn't want to go, he needed to know for himself.

He went back in the house and sat on the sofa, Scout joined him at his feet once more, his brown eyes looking sadly up at him.

"I need to know if she went willingly." He said aloud.

Scout howled.

"You too…huh?" Quint looked at the dog and pet him, "I miss her too, Scout."

He climbed the stairs two at a time and thrust open the door to her bedroom. All her clothes were still there, her luggage. Everything was there. Although there was no sign of a struggle, she hadn't bothered taking a thing as far as he could tell. Why? Why would she leave her clothes? It made no sense.

He went back out in the yard, this time studying the direction of foot prints and what they meant.

He saw a big print and a little print. He saw the little print had a deeper indention, as though maybe she struggled. My God! Banks had made her go with him?

Anger spurred his actions. He went to get his horse out of the barn and threw a blanket and saddle over him, cinching him. Scout had followed him out and watched him for some sign. "No Scout, you stay. I'll be back soon."

The tracks led away from the ranch, toward the Banks ranch.

He grimaced.

For a while he had thought Banks a crook and underhanded, but he never figured on him taking Priscilla. Nigel hadn't reacted to Priscilla's presence. Quint was almost sure he didn't care for her in any way, so why did he take her? What did he want with her?

Quint rode long and hard until he approached the Banks ranch. A light flickered from the window on the first floor.

He dismounted and hobbled his horse in some bushes on a hill above the house, then began to edge his way on foot to the big house.
